Arc House Lake Oconee

This was a unique project for me because it was a new build. So no before pictures unless you count a lot full of Georgia pine trees.
The client and I had a vision of a very modern house which was challenging because Reynolds at Lake Oconee has a very strong architectural review board and, let’s just say, they like their houses traditional. So we came up with the idea of the arcs which are certainly a classical design element, but were very modern for the Review Board. While it took work and compromise, what we were able to achieve is the best of both worlds.
For the client building a second home in her “happy place,” this house is all about family, friends, togetherness and fun which to her means games and activities (card games, pool, swimming boating, watching Georgia football). So, she wanted “wow” design, but not a precious house.

The house is named Arc House because we were able to incorporate arcs in the architecture and in interior elements like the kitchen island. We married that rounded shape with big steel windows full of straight lines. Those windows serve as a counterpoint to the arcs and allow you to see through the house to the lake. The result is the house feels light, airy and even though it’s a large house, intimate.
This project was also unique because it was a collaboration with the architect, the client, and an interior design firm who did all the furniture and décor. While I played an integral role in the overall design and materials, I specifically designed: the kitchen, butler’s pantry, laundry room, mudroom, bathrooms (8 of them), fireplaces (3 of them), library (ceiling and cabinets) metal screen in the kitchen, main bar, other bars (Morning Bar, Theater Bar). I also did all the lighting and most of the paint and wall choices.
The result is that the client is thrilled with her home and it made a big impression at Lake Oconee–lots of people continue to come by to see it!
